I coordinated, trained, and managed sixty child life, dance marathon, and pediatric specialty clinic volunteers. I have created volunteer handouts in order to provide volunteers with the best information possible.

I was awarded the Dr. Ken Magid Child Advocacy Service Scholarship that gave me the opportunity to travel to Calderón Ecuador to work with children birth-five experiencing poverty. I assisted daycare staff in daily cares for the children. In addition, I provided the children with educational opportunities and promoted play. Promoting play was essential as it fosters the ability for children to learn, grow, develop, communicate, and express his or her self. Play opportunities at the day care come last, because of the shortage of staff members. Therefore, I advocated for play in order to promote the children’s well-beings.

Child Life

Intern

As a child life assistant, I worked with infants, toddlers, school-age children, and teenagers. I facilitated group activities and provide one-one play interventions and supports for the children and their families. In addition, I helped the child life specialists with daily tasks and coordination of special events. I had opportunities to build therapeutic relationships with the children and their families. Play is the main intervention that is implemented in order to support the children who are experiencing stressors. Additionally, empathetic communication skills are vital when providing services and supports to children and their families.
I was a child life intern at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. My primary rotations were in the Hematology and Oncology Clinic and the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. During my internship, I learned many of the responsibilities of child life professionals. My main responsibilities were to provide procedural preparation, support, and distraction during a variety of procedures, teach and model coping techniques, utilize and encourage play as a healing modality, and effectively chart and communicate psychosocial interventions that were performed.
